The Elder Park

I am posting these pictures from the main website because someone double posted on one subject, "The Elder Park" and cause it to get corrupted. So I had to delete the post and start again. Sorry for any inconvenience caused.

John Elder (1824-69), a partner in Randolph, Elder & Co, marine engineers in Glasgow. He was described as a man of genius whose marine engines enabled ships to travel further and so opened up shipping trade. Under John Elder's direction the business thrived, and acquired a shipbuilding yard at Govan in 1860. By 1868, when the firm became John Elder & Co and moved to the Fairfield Shipyard in Govan, named after the farm which once stood there. it was recognised as one of the world's leading shipbuilders and marine engineers. Unfortunately John Elder died at the age of 45 in 1869 leaving Isabella a widow with no children.

Re: The Elder Park

Hi Jimmy and Baldebane,

Fantastic collection of pictures again Jimmy, many I have not seen before.
Used to be a smashing park and very popular.  A lot of the poorer families who could not afford holidays used to spend virtually the two weeks summer holiday in the park. When you asked the kids about holidays it was 'hame ill dae me'.
Sadly like much of Govan seems to attract a lot of vandalism and when I was up a few years ago they had paint daubed over the monuments. the wee once 'preserved building' farmhouse looks derelict now and should be pulled down if has not been already.

You are most welcome David. I keep turning up pictures from all over the place about Govan and it surrounding areas. I know some people might think I am being overdramatic but I couldn't have wished to have grown up anywhere else in the world, (and I have been all over the world because of my time in the armed forces. The craziest times were the times I was sent to Nr Ireland becuase of the troubles there and the madest time was in 1982 in the Falklands but that's another story!) Govan seems to have got way, way, under my skin and I can't and don't want to shift it. Some day I must put a pen to paper, (so to speak) just like yourself David and write down my childhood days in Govan.

Go I don't half go on when I start! lol Okay I can hear you all say "Shut up Jimmy!" Ha! Ha! Ha! Have areat weekend and a wonderful week ahead! Bye!

Haste ye back.
