The Death of The Lyceum Cinema

The Lyceum Cinema Govan Such a sad end!

Opened in December 1938, the Lyceum was built on the site of the earlier Lyceum Theatre, which had opened in 1899, and burned down in 1937.

The replacement building, by McNair & Elder, was a stunning streamlined suburban super-cinema, originally seating 2,600. The booking was performed by AB King, as with so many other halls in the west of Scotland. Sadly today the Cinema is no more although the building still stands today as a "B" Listed building. One of Govan's Landmarks in a sad and sorry state with its paint that flakes away day by day.

The Once grand Lyceum today. No more, "The King and I" or "Jailhouse Rock with Elvis Presley."

Its interior design now sadly derelict!

Although the cinema continued until 1981 its original circular paybox was pulled over to one side.

It's so sad to see the inside of the Lyceum in such a state. It always seemed so elegant inside, in complete contrast to the streets of Govan! I remember sitting, during the Saturday matinee, waiting for those luscious velvet curtains to open so that we could be transported to another world.
Remember those queues outside, waiting for what seemed like for ever, clutching our 6d and sometimes with an ice orange jubilee stuck up our jumpers (forbidden inside the cinema.)
Any word on what is to become of the Lyceum now?

Hi Ellen, I too remember the Ice Orange Jubilee stuck up our jumpers.... B,B, blinking freezing brrrrrr!!! As to the Lyceum itself, There is supposed to be £20,000 being spent on it. The LR team are in the process of researching and concluding different funding strands to bring this building back to life. Part of the plans are to bring a cinema circle/balcony back to use which has been closed for 30 years and has a seating capacity of 480 seats, they hope to regenerate the building for the area of Govan , Glasgow, Scotland.

The previous lower stalls which had a seating capacity of 2200 are to be regenerated in to events halls and other projects such as a Hollywood esque restaurant; they also have plans to turn many areas of the redundant building in to community arts and media projects relating to film and media.

I hope it happens as it would be such a shame to lost the cinema all together.

That's great news Jimmy. I knew it was to be saved but didn't know the details. I'm glad that the Lyceum, the PI, Govan Old Parish and other churches, Black Man statue, Govan Cross, Elderpark Library etc all remain landmarks when everything has changed round about. At least with those still in place, we can still work out where our tenements once stood!  (happy)

Yes Ellen it would be sad to lose them.

Re: The Death of The Lyceum Cinema

Now they are saying the Lyceum Cinema is up for sale. It is a B-Listed building so they just can't knock it down or alter it too much so I don't know now what is going to happen to it! I used to sell papers outside the Lyceum whan I was a wee boy. "Times or Citizen Final" was the call...

Here is some more information on the Lyceum... > The Lyceum Cinema HERE
