Margo McDonald

Margo MacDonald - obituary

Margo MacDonald was the charismatic face of the SNP in the 1970s whose fervent socialism led to splits with her own party.

Margo MacDonald who has died aged 70, was the larger-than-life face of Scottish nationalism, the winner of a sensational by-election at Govan in 1973, an inaugural member of the Scottish Parliament and the political and marital partner of Jim Sillars, who quit Labour to found his own party before also winning Govan for the SNP.

Margo MacDonald was living proof of the party’s fractiousness. Convinced that nationalism was as much about personal liberty as freedom for the Scottish nation, she twice left the party — under duress in 1982 when its leaders lost patience with her Left-wing 79 Group; and again before the 2003 Holyrood elections, sitting for her final two terms as an Independent.

Re: Margo McDonald

Margo lost Govan to boundary move
Many of the tributes to Margo MacDonald state that she won Govan at the November 1973 by-election, but lost it at the General Election in February 1974. Govan's constituency boundaries were altered at that General Election. I have always believed if Margo had fought Govan under its old boundaries, she would have held her seat. Margo was a politician of the people and for the people. It was a great privilege to know her.

Re: Margo McDonald

Hi Jimmy,.
No problem with the re-hash of Margo McDonald, it does look better.

That is how I remember it way back. When I first went to Ibrox the programs had the teams on the front of the page and the guy that sold them was really friendly and humorus.
We walked past that photo scene down to the Copland Road end where the Boys gates were.

Re: Margo McDonald

Thanks for that David. Hey, I still have an old program of Rangers from way back. Got it when I was a wee boy, (i think about five or something like that my Dad gave me it.) I can also remember the team I repeated over and over to remember: Rangers - Ritchie, Shearer, Caldow, Greig, McKinnon, Baxter, Scott, McMillan, Millar, Brand, Wilson. I thought I would have forgotten them by now. Gettin' real long in the tooth now! Must look out that program and post a copy on it on here. I'm sure someone remembers the game. Anyway hope all you Govanites are haveing a fantastic Easter weekend. Bye for now!

Haste ye back.
